The first few generations of the Skyline were more focused on luxury and comfort. However, by the time the C10 Skyline (Hakosuka) was introduced in the late 1960s, performance became a key focus.
C10 Skyline (1968-1972): Known as the Hakosuka (a combination of “hako” meaning box and “suka” from Skyline), this was the first Skyline to bear the GT-R badge. It was powered by a 2.0-liter S20 inline-6 engine, making it a formidable force on the racetrack.
C110 Skyline (1972-1977): This model introduced the Kenmeri nickname, derived from a popular TV commercial featuring a couple named Ken and Mary. Although a GT-R variant was developed, it was short-lived due to emission regulations.
Skyline GT-R (R32, R33, R34)
The R32, R33, and R34 GT-Rs are the most iconic and beloved Skylines in the performance car community. They cemented the Skyline’s reputation as a supercar killer and established its dominance in motorsports.
R32 Skyline GT-R (1989-1994)
Known as the car that earned the nickname “Godzilla,” the R32 GT-R was a breakthrough in performance engineering.
Engine: It featured the famous RB26DETT 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-6, producing 276 hp (officially), although many believe the real figure was higher.
Technology: The R32 introduced the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system and Super-HICAS four-wheel steering, offering superior traction and handling.
Motorsport Success: The R32 GT-R dominated the Group A racing scene and won the Bathurst 1000 in Australia, solidifying its legendary status.
R33 Skyline GT-R (1995-1998)
The R33 refined the formula with improved aerodynamics and handling while retaining the RB26DETT engine.
Performance: Slightly larger and heavier than the R32, but more stable at high speeds. It became the first production car to lap the NΓΌrburgring Nordschleife in under 8 minutes.
Tech Upgrades: Enhanced all-wheel drive and active limited-slip differentials made the R33 even more capable on the road and track.
R34 Skyline GT-R (1999-2002)
Arguably the most famous and beloved Skyline, the R34 GT-R became an instant classic due to its aggressive styling, advanced technology, and balance of performance.
Engine: It still featured the legendary RB26DETT engine but with more refined power delivery.
Advanced Technology: The R34 introduced the Multi-Function Display (MFD), which allowed drivers to monitor various engine and vehicle parameters in real time.
Pop Culture Fame: The R34 gained worldwide fame, thanks in part to its appearances in movies like Fast & Furious and video games like Gran Turismo.
